Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that after the war in Gaza ends, Israel should hand control of the territory over to the United States. His remarks have caused a strong backlash from human rights organizations, the United Nations, and Arab leaders, who see the idea as unrealistic and potentially a form of forced displacement.
In a statement on Thursday, Trump claimed that Palestinians would be relocated to "safer and more beautiful communities" with modern housing. However, his administration later clarified that any displacement would be temporary, with the goal of rebuilding Gaza. Despite this, Trump's original comments made it seem like the relocation would be permanent.
Trump's plan was unexpected, even within his team, with reports indicating that senior aides were caught off guard. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the idea "worth paying attention to," but many doubt it will ever happen due to legal and logistical challenges.
Gaza has been devastated by 15 months of war between Israel and Hamas. Over 47,000 people have been killed, and much of the region has been reduced to rubble. The United Nations warns that it could take over two decades to clear the destruction, with water and sanitation systems nearly collapsed.
Trump has previously described his vision of transforming Gaza into a luxurious "Riviera of the Middle East," but critics argue that forcibly removing Palestinians from their land would violate international law. While Trump insists that no American soldiers would be sent to Gaza, his comments have added to tensions in the Middle East.
The situation in Gaza remains tough, with ongoing ceasefire talks and uncertainty over the future of its people.
